We are honored to host at Neda Yoga Shala two exceptional musicians, George Papaioannou and Yiannis Zannis, for a concert of tropical music. The evening will have influences from the musical traditions of Greece, Turkey, India, Persia and other regions, and will bring together the melodic world of tropes and makams with the rhythmic world of Indian tradition and the melodic environment of ragas. The two musicians will perform compositions from their album Borago as well as new material, with lots of improvisation and good humour!

George Papaioannou was born in 1982 in Athens. He studied music from an early age at the Attiko Conservatory. From the age of 15 he participated in classical music orchestras and in various ensembles with a variety of musical styles. In 2000 he studied sound engineering and at the same time he started to work with traditional music. He attended seminars of Turkish and Arabic violin and Bulgarian music at the Labyrinth workshop and a seminar of Indian music at the Royaumont Foundation in France with L. Subramaniam. He was a member of the symphony orchestra of the Municipality of Heraklion. Since 2012 he has been teaching violin in tropical music at the Labyrinth Music Workshop (MEL) http://www.labyrinthmusic.gr/en/ with Ross Dally as artistic director. He has participated in concerts and music festivals all over Greece as well as in Spain, Italy, France, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Italy, France, Sweden and other countries in Europe and Turkey. He has collaborated with many important and beloved musicians such as Ross Dally, Kostis Avyssinos, Nikos Papaioannou, the Hainides and many others. He is active in the discography with many participations including in the group Neda which he is a founding member. In 2018 he composed together with Nikos Papaioannou the music for the film of the well-known Turkish director Emin Alper - "A tale from the three sisters (Kizkardesler)" which participated in many international festivals and won many awards, including film of the year and best music at the Istanbul festival.

Yannis Zannis was born in 1979 in Athens. He started to learn classical guitar in a branch of the National Conservatory of Music at the age of 8, and later attended private lessons on electric guitar and played with various musical groups. In 1999 he came in contact with Indian classical music in Athens, starting tabla lessons with Lefteris Mitropoulos. Since 2003 he continues his musical studies in India, in the city of Benares (Varanasi) following the traditional way of musical education in Tabla under the guidance of Pt. Kishan Ramdohkar and other teachers. He is also being taught Tabla to accompany classical Indian Kathak dance by Pt. Ravi Shankar Mishra and attending classes in classical Indian Dhrupad singing. In 2013 he receives his Diploma for Tabla from Prayag Sangeet Samiti University (Allahabad - India). He attends three masterclasses on Tabla by the renowned virtuoso Pt.Ram Kumar Mishra in Athens and in 2016, the seminar "Poetry of rhythm" by Djamsid and Bijan Chemirani at Lavyrinth music workshop in Hudetsi. Από το 2018 αρχίζει προχωρημένα μαθήματα Τάμπλας στην Καλκούτα με τον διεθνούς φήμης μουσικό και έναν από τους σπουδαιότερους δεξιοτέχνες της Τάμπλας, Pt.Subhankar Banerjee. Since 2018 she has been taking advanced tabla lessons in Kolkata with the internationally renowned musician and one of the greatest tabla masters, Pt.Subhankar Banerjee. Yannis has performed concerts in India, Turkey, Italy, Belgium, Israel and Greece. He has released two albums of Indian classical music accompanying Dr.Govinda Goswami on sitar and Ido Segal on vina. He has taught Tabla and Indian classical music at Pangea World music center and Labyrinth Musical Workshop in Hudetsi. He has participated in the Pasiphae theatre group and has composed in Tabla music for theatre and Indian classical dance Kathak.
