Asana Foundations Seminar Vol.5 with Anastasia Biliri

A few moments from the workshop “Basic Principles of Yoga Asanas,” held last weekend with Anastasia Biliri.

Exploring the body can be a wonderful form of meditation and the starting point for a magical process of self-discovery. It is constantly with us and speaks to us ceaselessly through our external and internal senses: the rhythm of our breath, contact with the ground or our clothes, the contraction or relaxation of a muscle, the rhythm of our heartbeat… The immediacy and vitality of these sensations offer our attention a steady anchor back to the present moment.

Habits, experiences, and emotions are reflected in the way we stand, breathe, and move. Through practice, we can recognize these patterns and, through mindful movement, release deeply ingrained impressions. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika defines an asana as any posture that cultivates stability, health, and lightness in the body. Stability that we can find by consciously engaging whatever tool we need at any given moment, and lightness by releasing whatever we carry in our bodies from the past that weighs us down. This exploration extends far beyond the boundaries of the physical body.

With our attention constantly focused outward on the infinite stimuli that surround us—to the point where connecting with our inner selves often feels unbearable or alien— it is a gift to return to tools that allow us to cultivate a warmer relationship with ourselves.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this exploration. Each body brought its own story. We are also deeply grateful to Nikos Karalekas for his invaluable support.

We look forward to seeing you again soon!
